Walks Around Ardfinnan: The Village, the Suir and the Knockmealdowns

Ardfinnan is a walker's village on a national trail, with a river at its door and the Knockmealdown foothills close behind.

Ardfinnan is a village of 978 people (2022 census) on the River Suir, and walking here is easy to start and hard to run out of. There is a short stroll in the village, a national trail through it, a river that is part of the Suir Blueway, and the Knockmealdown Mountains rising to the south. One honest note: we could not find a waymarked loop that starts and ends in the village itself, so below we separate what is verified from what you should check locally.

A short walk in the village

Begin at the bridge. The 14-arch bridge was started soon after the castle was finished, and it replaced the ford that pilgrims used on Saint Declán’s route. Standing on it, you see the weir, the old mill and Ardfinnan Castle on its rock. It is a private home, so keep to public ground. The bridge carries traffic, controlled by a one-way light system since the end of 2015, so use the footways and take photographs from a safe spot. Ardfinnan Bridge explains its story.

From there, follow the public road and riverbank around the village. For the history underfoot, read the history of Ardfinnan village and Saint Finnan and early Christian Ardfinnan.

The Tipperary Heritage Way

This is the headline walk. The Tipperary Heritage Way is a 56 km National Waymarked Trail that opened on 7 September 2002. It begins at the Vee Gap in the Knockmealdowns and follows the Suir to Cashel, passing Ardfinnan, Cahir and Golden. Part of it follows Saint Declan’s Way, the ancient road between Ardmore and Cashel, and sites along it include Cahir Castle, the Swiss Cottage, Hore Abbey and the Rock of Cashel. Rated moderate, it is normally done in two days, with about 150 m of climbing.

Walking just the Ardfinnan to Cahir stretch is a sensible half-day, ending at Cahir Castle. The village to Cahir road distance is about 10 km, though the trail will not follow the road exactly, so plan transport back.

Saint Declan’s Way over the mountains

Saint Declan’s Way is a pilgrim route. A led walk in 2015 went from Melleray to Ardfinnan, about 18 km over the Knockmealdowns with roughly 330 m of ascent, in around four hours. Knockmealdown Active has also organised a five-stage walk of the route each year since 2016 (except 2020). It is a point-to-point walk, so you need a lift or a bus at one end.

The Suir Blueway

The Suir Blueway is a 53 km route from Cahir to Carrick-on-Suir via Clonmel. Be clear on what each part is for:

If you want a flat river walk with signs, the Carrick to Clonmel towpath is the better choice, and Ardfinnan is a good base for it. See the Suir Blueway and Suir valley.

Into the foothills

The Knockmealdowns straddle the Tipperary and Waterford border, and the peak, Knockmealdown, is 794 m. About 4 km from Ardfinnan is Goatenbridge, where Sport Ireland lists the Knockmealdown Lakes Loop (7.6 km) from Knockballiniry car park, with other waymarked loops nearby. Read the Knockmealdowns and the Vee for the high pass.

Fishing the Suir

If you prefer to sit by it, Ardfinnan Anglers hold licensed rights to roughly 15 km of bank with brown trout and salmon. Ask locally about permits.
